Q: How did the Eugene School of Karate begin?
A: Albert and Elida Roy moved from Yakima, Washington, where they grew up, attended university together and married. They came to Eugene with plans of continuing their educations at the University of Oregon and opening a martial arts school. Their first class was held at Sheldon Community Center in the fall of 1992. The number of locations increased to include all of the community centers and most elementary schools in the Eugene and Springfield metroplex; the size of classes grew also, so they consolidated their many locations under one roof in 1993 and moved in 2008 moved to their current location at 921 International Way.
Our staff has over 100 years or martial arts experience combined. Albert has a Master's Degree in effective teaching methodologies in Physical Education, Health and Athletics. He is also a certified karate coach through the American Coaching Effectiveness Program (ACEP). Albert also developed a manual while in college for karate instructors to improve their teaching skills. Elida`s degrees are in History and Anthropology. Elida and Albert's emphasis on student-centered learning and quality instruction was birthed out of their research in college. The Eugene School of Karate enrolls over 300 students. |

Q: What style of martial arts do you teach?
A: Our style is called Shudokan. Shudokan is considered classical Okinawan in nature; which means it emphasizes and balances both the beauty and precision of the Japanese styles and the functionality and power of the Okinanwan styles. At the upper levels of training it also includes fundamental judo, ju-jitsu and grappling skills. For those who are looking for something other than traditional martial arts the ESK also offers a cardio-fitness program we call Extreme Kickboxing. |

|
Q: Could you describe the atmosphere of your facility and your teaching style?
A: Even though our style is traditional you can rest assured our instructional methods and curriculum are cutting-edge, top of the line. We strive to make instruction both educational and enjoyable for everyone. We create an atmosphere that children and adults alike find supportive, motivational and challenging. |

Q: Is sparring necessary to learn martial arts?
A: Yes and no. The principles of distancing, timing, speed, and stragety are developed through sparring. These are an integral part of a student's karate development and the reason why we include sparring drills in classes. At ESK, we ask students to participate in two sparring classes a term to enhance their martial arts training.. |

Q: Your eXecutive Kickboxing classes sound fun, what are they like?
A: Sweat. Adrenaline. Gasp for air. Slam your fist against the bag. Stress release. Do it again. It is cardio-fitness with martial arts combined. Aerobic kickboxing was recently rated the number one calorie-burning exercise by popular fitness magazines. Classes are not choreographed so we can accommodate beginners and advanced members in the same class. We play Christian rock and pop music with a techno edge to make us the true alternative. We believe this is one of the reasons members leave our classes so energized - they are not only working on their body but also their soul is being lifted up. |

| |
Q: Will my child receive moral or character-building instruction in classes?
A:At Eugene School of Karate, our Life Skill Program is one of our most effective educational tools. It is designed to inspire and motivate students to be and do their best in life and to instill respect, goal setting, honor, compassion and academic excellence - to name a few. A new theme is presented every month as a part of our personal growth and development program. Our instructors discuss the theme, providing stories and parables that reaffirm its positive benefits. |
|
|
Q: Are there any other fees or costs I should be aware of?
A: Yes. Every three months, we hold promotional exams; we call these Recitals. There is a $35 fee to participate in the recital. Students who are promoted to the next belt color receive a new belt and certificate, which are included in the recital fee. |

|
Q: How do you feel about competitions?
A: We believe competitions can be an exciting and valuable part of a karate practitioner`s development. Elida and Albert Roy, the head instructors at the Eugene School of Karate, both competed at the regional, national and international level before opening the school. Members who want to experience competition can be coached in that direction but competitions are, and will always be, optional.
We provide our members the opportunity to participate in six tournaments per year: Our own local Compassion Tournament in January, our network`s College Scholarship Tournament in October, Regional Championships in March, Walla Walla in February, Lake Chelan Weapons Tournament in May and Internationals in April! |
